Lower School in Madrid

The Lower School stage represents the foundation on which students build their academic and personal success in an international environment. Active Learning Methodology in Lower School

Education in the Lower School stage is characterized by a balanced combination of innovation and strong values.
We understand that elementary school is the key moment to establish study habits and a love of learning. Our classrooms are laboratories of ideas where technology supports exploration and discovery.

The curriculum aligns with U.S. academic standards, preparing students for the International Baccalaureate (IB) in later years. Teachers serve as mentors, guiding each child to ensure that both students who need additional support and those seeking greater academic challenges can thrive and excel.

Stages of the Lower School System

The Lower School program at Aquinas American School spans five key academic years for child development. Unlike the traditional Spanish system, our approach divides these years into stages of progressive development that facilitate the transition from Elementary School to Middle School.

Early Grades: Grade 1 and Grade 2 (Ages 6–8)

At this level, the primary focus is bilingual literacy and logical reasoning. Students strengthen their reading and writing skills in both English and Spanish.
The concept of “learning through discovery” is introduced, where mathematics and science are taught through hands-on activities and direct observation, laying the foundation for scientific curiosity.

Intermediate Grades: Grade 3 and Grade 4 (Ages 8–10)

During these years, students transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.”
The curriculum becomes more interdisciplinary, integrating projects in social studies and science. Students develop greater independence in their work and begin learning organizational tools and independent study habits, always under the guidance of their mentors.

Transition Grade: Grade 5 (Ages 10–11)

Fifth grade serves as the bridge to Middle School.
Students deepen their abstract thinking and complex reasoning skills. They are encouraged to take leadership roles within the Lower School community and further develop their digital skills. This year consolidates the maturity needed to successfully move into the next stage of their education.
